5 signs you need to take your child to the Emergency Room

I have been to the emergency room on several occasions. But when do you know when to go or when to wait to see your child’s primary doctor. Here are
5 reasons you need to take your child to the emergency room:

1. Respiratory distress (croup, asthma, pneumonia, allergic reactions)

2. Altered mental status (may be a seizure, ingestion, head injury, meningitis,
inconsolable crying)

3. Fever in newborns (any fever 100.4 degrees in a child less than 3 months of age requires urgent evaluation)

4. Injuries needing acute treatment (factures, lacerations)

5. Patients who are a danger to themselves or others (behavioral/psychiatric issues)

Also go with your gut! If you feel something isn’t right go with it.
~Parents knows best~

This weekend C.J. had to be seen in the emergency room. He was jumping on the couch and off the armrest. I redirected him several times. As I turned to walk into the kitchen to prepare dinner,C.J. had jumped off of the armrest of the couch and landed on his right arm. I heard a thump and a pop. He jumped up screaming running towards me. C.J. has a very high tolerance for pain, a lot of times would never know if he hurt himself if I was not around to see it.
I immediately go into nurse mode and check to for any deformity or bone poking out. Luckily there was none of thee above. However I did notice how his arm was limp and he held it in his left hand close to his body ,and he didn’t want me touching his arm. I went with my gut,so I loaded C.J. And his baby brother into the car and off we went to the emergency room.

While we were there in the E.R. the doctor examined his arm,but wanted to make certain there was nothing major going on. I am happy to report that C.J. did awesome for his x-rays. I stood next to him with that ugly heavy protective vest on, and told him the guys are going to take a picture of his arm. Right before they took the x-ray, I told him to say cheese. That’s what he does when he smiles for a picture. C.J. sat very still has he said “cheese”. I was so proud of him. I will be following up with his primary. He is still having som discomfort.
